Between university and job: health insurance, semester ticket, student loans – that’s important

As a student, you are usually covered by statutory health and long-term care insurance up to the age of 25. This means that you are co-insured through your parents and do not have to pay your own contributions. You are covered by student insurance from your 25th birthday. The contributions are just under 100 euros per month.

You remain in family insurance or student insurance after completing your studies, as long as you are enrolled – i.e. until the end of the semester at the latest. The following possibilities arise for the gap until the start of a career or a master’s degree:

– If you are younger than 23, you remain in family insurance and do not have to pay any contributions.

– If you receive unemployment benefit, the employment agency will pay the contributions.

– If the first two points are not met, you must take out voluntary insurance. The monthly contributions are at least 186 euros plus an additional contribution from the respective health insurance company. On average, that’s 196 euros.

Important: If you had private health insurance as a student, you cannot switch to statutory health insurance until you start working. This is only possible if you receive unemployment benefit and the employment agency pays your contributions.
